Moving to Austria checklist: what to plan before you relocate

1. Confirm your right to stay
Your first question is whether you are an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, or a third-country national. Austria’s official migration portal explains that third-country nationals generally need a residence permit when planning to stay longer than six months.
2. Map the documents you may need
Start early with passports, birth and marriage certificates, police records where relevant, education or employment documents, translations, apostilles, and proof of funds or insurance.
3. Research housing before you arrive
Short-term accommodation can help while you learn the rental market. For some residence routes, adequate accommodation or housing costs can matter, so keep leases and confirmations organized.
4. Plan insurance and healthcare access
For many residence titles, Austria expects health insurance that provides benefits in Austria and covers all risks. Employment in Austria may connect you to public social insurance.
